The Domain Name System (DNS) helps web users navigate their way around the Internet. Every computer on the Internet has a unique address, similar to a telephone number, which is a rather complicated string of numbers; called its "IP address" (IP stands for "Internet Protocol").
It would be far too difficult for Internet users to remember everyone's IP address, so the DNS makes it easier by allowing a familiar string of letters (the "domain name") to be used instead of the arcane IP address. The result is that, Internet users can type a memorable and marketable name like www.cornwallshoppingcentre.ca, instead of a long and difficult string of numbers.
